How Do I Help A Stray Dog in Ferndale?
Find out where to report loose animals and what will happen after they're picked up.

"Anybody know who I can call about a stray dog that's been running around Ferndale/Pleasant Ridge? A coworker tried to coax him into her car but he ran off. He looks hungry, thin, and isn't wearing a collar. We've seen him running around all week and are desperate to get him some help. Ferndale Police no longer have an animal control officer and we'd like to call a no kill shelter. Can someone help or guide me in the right direction? Thanks! β AnaMaria Castillo Gould asks on the Ferndale Patch Facebook page
Residents who need to report a stray dog in Ferndale may call Oakland County Animal Control at 248-391-4102 between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. Monday through Friday for assistance.
Michigan law requires the agency to hold dogs without tags for four business days and those with tags for seven business days while efforts are made to contact the owner, OCAC Administrative Supervisor Joanie Toole said.

If no one claims the dog during that time period, it will be put up for adoption; only animals that are aggressive, very old or severely ill be considered for euthanasia, she said.
"Oakland County Animal Control does not handle pest control issues or stray cats," the Ferndale Police Department website says. "Unwanted cats can be turned over to the Oakland County Animal Shelter located at 1700 Brown Road, Auburn Hills Michigan 48236."

The Ferndale Police Department will get involved with strays only if an animal poses a public safety risk.
"If it's a dangerous dog like a pit bull running loose then they can call the Police Department," Detective Sgt. Patrick Jones said. The Ferndale Police Department dispatch number is 248-541-3650.
Toole also reminds residents that "it's dog license season."
Licenses can be purchased at Ferndale City Hall or online at oakgov.com/petadoption; proof of a rabies vaccination will be required, she said.
