18 Days Till School: Donate School Supplies, Food to Blessings in a Backpack

Each day of the month leading up to the first day of school, Oakland Township Patch will bring you useful back-to-school information, tricks, trends and tips.

To help prepare students for school, in Oakland Township is teaming up with Blessings in a Backpack to collect food and school supplies for children in need in the Rochester and Oakland Township areas.

Blessings in a Backpack helps meet the nutritional needs of children and families over the weekends. It was founded after teachers noticed that some children who received free or reduced-fee lunches would return to school on Mondays tired and hungry because there was little or no food for them at home.

Blessings in a Backpack strives to provide those students with a backpack filled with food to take home every Friday and return on Monday. Each backpack contains several pounds of food, including tuna, peanut butter, macaroni and cheese, fruit juices, pastas, oatmeal, fruit bars and crackers.

To donate to Blessings in a Backpack, drop off food or school supplies to Oakland Optometry now through Sept. 1.
