Fire Department Honors Victims of 9/11, Dedicates Piece of World Trade Center

"It's a day to remember," Oakland Township fire chief says during ceremony at Fire Station No. 2 on Sunday morning.

Members of the , other township employees and their family members came together Sunday morning for a brief, intimate ceremony honoring the victims of 9/11 and the firefighters who gave their lives 10 years ago today.

The ceremony, hosted by Fire Chief Bill Benoit, was punctuated by the solemn 555 ringing of the fire bell, signifying the death of a member of the department. A moment of silence was also observed during the ceremony.

"It's a day to remember," Benoit said. "That's what we all want to do – just remember what happened and not forget it."

The piece of the World Trade Center will be housed at Fire Station No. 2 along with an American flag that has been raised over Ground Zero in New York City. The fire department also hopes to acquire an American flag that has been flown directly above Ground Zero in an Air Force plane today – the 10-year anniversary of 9/11.
