Photo Gallery: 10 Years Ago, Oakland Township Shows Patriotism on 9/11
Township employee Janine Saputo shares the photos she took on Sept. 11, 2001.
Like many people, Oakland Township resident Janine Saputo remembers exactly where she was and what she was doing on Sept. 11, 2001.
"9/11 was the day Oakland Township voted on the land preservation millage," Saputo wrote in an email to Patch. "I remember talking about the bombing coming out of the voting area here in the township where I vote."
Later that day, Saputo, who serves on the Oakland Township Planning Commission, drove around town snapping photographs of the many displays of patriotism in the township.

She captured images of the flag flying at half-staff in front of township hall, a sign reading "God Bless Firefighters" in downtown Goodison and numerous American flags and other displays.
"I just drove around and tried to capture the huge outpouring of patriotic feelings," she said.

Saputo, along with help from the Oakland Township Historic District Commission and other township employees, also took down the and preserved it in a custom-made flag case.
"I am thrilled to find (the photos) in time," said Saputo, who had misplaced the album in the decade since the terrorist attacks. "I can’t believe it is 10 years."
