Drugs Seized in Separate Arrests by Canton Police

Canton Police were traveling east bound Aug. 31 on Michigan Avenue approaching Haggerty Road when a silver four-door vehicle turned in front of the police car, according to a police report.

Police stopped the vehicle and an officer smelled what he believed was marijuana coming from the vehicle, the report said. The officer told the driver that because he could smell the suspected marijuana in the vehicle, he had probable cause to search the man’s car. The man told police he had an ounce of marijuana in the back seat.

Police recovered two bags of suspected marijuana in the back seat arm rest, one of which contained seven smaller bags of a substance resembling marijuana.

Police also found an unlabeled prescription pill bottle in the driver’s door pocket filled with yellow pills, and several pill bottles, some with the driver’s name and some with names scratched off. Police also found an electronic scale in the driver’s door pocket, findings consistent with that of a drug dealer, the report said.

Inside the trunk of the vehicle, police found a plastic bag with many smaller bags inside, each with a Batman logo.

When an officer moved a large stack of clothing, the report indicated, he found a black 9mm pistol with a full magazine and one round in the chamber.

The man also had an arrest warrant from Inkster, the report said.

Police arrested the man, but the specific charges were not included in the police report.

Oxycontin recovered after arrest

In a separate case, two additional bags with Batman logos were recovered in a recent arrest of another man. 

In that case, Canton Police responded Sept. 1 to an accident at a BP station at Cherry Hill near Canton Center Road where a 2001 Ford Escape apparently rear-ended a 1997 Plymouth Breeze, according to a police report.

No injuries were reported in the accident.

When police questioned the driver of the Escape, he had slurred speech and was shaking, the report said.

When questioned, the man told police he had taken the prescription medications Wellbutrin, Clonepin and Triliptle, and told police he has bipolar disorder, depression and schizophrenia, and denied taking any other medications, the report said.

According to the report, the man tested positive for using drugs and police arrested the man on charges of operating a vehicle while under the influence of drugs.

At the police station, the police were searching the man and appeared to be hiding something in his hand, the report said. The man handed over two small plastic bags with black and yellow Batman markings. The bags contained small white round pills, and the man told police they were oxycontin.

The man told police he wanted his lawyer present, and police did not question him about the pills at that time.

The pills tested positive as Oxycodone hydrochloride, a Schedule 2 narcotic, the report said. Police recovered 33 pills in total, 18 in one bag and 15 in the other. 

It is not yet apparent whether the two cases are related.
