Constellium CARES: Employees Help Habitat for Humanity Build a Home
4 Constellium Van Buren employees volunteered 28 hours, as part of Constellium CARES to help support and build a home in Ypsilanti.

The Van Buren Constellium CARES group regularly meets to discuss and plan community outreach activities as well as employee engagement opportunities. On a recent Saturday morning, four employees from Constellium's Van Buren facility gathered in Ypsilanti to support Habitat for Humanity by renovating a house to create a new home for a family in need. Habitat for Humanity is a global nonprofit housing organization working in local communities across all 50 states in the U.S. and in approximately 70 countries. Habitat’s vision is of a world where everyone has a decent place to live.

Before the team got started, their greeter, Nancy, gave an overview of the house's safety and expected construction to be completed on this day, which included tearing down the ceiling and walls to ensure there was no damage inside. Afterward, their House Leader, Jackson, demonstrated a few tricks of the trade on how to remove drywall and plywood. Then the team got to work!

Their tasks consisted of tearing down the kitchen and basement ceiling, removing the outside cable and telephone lines, and tearing down an addition in the back of the house. Constellium's Van Buren Plant Manager Alex Garcia jokingly commented, “Linda got to learn how to use a saw and she was addicted to it. She wanted to chop everything down. Needless to say, we had to take it away from her.”

All in all, the Constellium team had a great time bonding while also helping the community and a family in need. As a next step, the organization will now add all new plumbing, wiring, and heating/cooling to the house.

The Constellium team was told that the family that will receive this house is currently going through Habitat’s selection process and has not been confirmed. What is known for sure is that the recipient family will receive a beautiful house and that Constellium's dedicated employees are helping make the community a better place to work and live.
“We would jump at the chance to do it again. Habitat for Humanity does great things across our community,” stated Constellium Van Buren Plant Manager, Alex Garcia when asked if the team will volunteer again in the future.
