CANTON, Mich. — Sept. 25, 2025 — The Senior Comedy Community, a Metro Detroit-based business dedicated to improving the well-being of older adults through laughter, is inviting seniors to step up to the mic this fall.

On Tuesday, October 21, 2025, SCC will host open auditions at Canton Brew Works from 4:30–6:00 PM. Seniors age 60+ are invited to deliver 1–2 minutes of stand-up — no prior experience required. These auditions are part of SCC’s effort to expand its pool of senior comics, older adults who will rehearse, refine their sets, and get feedback from peers and local pros before performing in senior living communities.

Founder Amy Huber-Smith explains: “If you have life experience, you have a lot of material to draw from. I’ve met many funny seniors, but too often they’re held back by myths I aim to bust.” Common doubts include:

  • “I’m too old to start something new.”
  • “I’m only funny in the moment.”
  • “Stand-up comedy is only for young people.”

The auditions are just the beginning. Participants continue to rehearse, test new material, and get feedback from fellow comics, building confidence and shaping comedy that’s polished and relatable.
Huber-Smith, who has been performing stand-up since 2009, draws on her HR background and her experience as her mother’s caregiver to show that comedy is more than entertainment. “I’ve seen how humor can break down barriers, reduce stress, and bring people together,” she says. “It’s free medication with no side effects.”

One senior performer even shared that he tried stand-up as a way to pull himself out of a grief spiral. “I realized I couldn’t be funny and grieve at the same time,” he said — proof that humor can open the door to healing.

SCC brings live programming directly into senior living communities, beginning with its Taste of Comedy Hour. The program blends stand-up from local pros and amateur seniors with interactive games that get residents involved. As residents see other seniors performing, they begin to think, “Maybe I could do that too.” generating interest in the SCC's workshop offerings where residents learn hone a set and perform in front of friends and family.

Senior living leaders are also taking notice. As one leader put it: “Finally — something other than the three B’s: Bingo, Book Club, and Bible Study.” indicating the challenges of maintaining a vibrant activities calendar which often becomes the key to attracting and retaining seniors.

By elevating senior humor inside and outside of living communities, the SCC is fostering senior connection and proving that laughter really is the best medicine.
