Plymouth-Canton Board Members Face Recall After Voting To Drop Chief Mascot

The board voted to drop the name and mascot after members said they received complaints that the imagery was offensive to Native Americans.

PLYMOUTH-CANTON, MI — Three Plymouth-Canton school board members are facing a recall petition after they voted to drop Canton High School's "Chief" mascot and arrowhead logo.

Plymouth-Canton Community Schools Board of Education President Shawn Wilson, Vice President Lauren Christenson and Treasurer Patrick Kehoe were listed in the recall, which was approved by the Wayne County Election Commission on Wednesday.

The petition simply states each member "voted on July 11, 2023 to retire Canton High School’s use of the nickname Chiefs and the arrowhead logo."

The board voted 6-1 in July to get rid of the name and mascot comes after board members said they received lots of complaints from the community, including from students, who believe the name, logo and mascot are offensive to Native Americans.

Board members said Canton High School will most likely keep its red and white colors as students pick their news mascot and logo.
