Plymouth Twp. School Closing After 52 Years

Officials said the school is closing primarily due to low enrollment.

PLYMOUTH TOWNSHIP, MI — A Plymouth Township school is closing after more than five decades.

New Morning School, located at 14501 N. Haggerty Road, says it will permanently close its doors after the 2024-2025 school year.

School officials said the closure is due to significantly low enrollment projections for the coming year. Despite recruiting efforts, enrollment had been steadily declining, falling to just 39 K-8 students for the 2024-2025 school year.

"We are incredibly proud of our students, staff, and the countless families who have shaped New Morning School over the years," the school Board said in a statement. "Though our physical doors will close, our legacy and impact will endure in the lives of those we’ve touched."

Officials did say the Summer Science Camp will still take place June 23–July 10.

The K-8 tuition-based school was founded in 1973 as an idea that traditional education doesn't work for every child. Its founder, Elaine Kennedy envisioned a school where children were known, valued, and empowered.

The school invited former students, families, and staff to visit the school one last time and share memories during an Alumni Walkthrough on Thursday, June 26, from 4–6 p.m. Alumni Walkthrough RSVP: https://docs.google.com/.../1FAIpQLSebz8sy6OG.../viewform...

The school is accepting donations to support final expenses, including the farewell luncheon for staff and the alumni event. Contributions can be made at www.newmorningschool.org/give.
