Plymouth VFW Taking Entries For Scholarships
The Veterans of Foreign Wars is proud to sponsor a series of nationwide scholarships and recognition programs for the 2025-2016 School Year

The Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) is once again proud to sponsor a series of nationwide scholarships and recognition programs for the 2025-2026 school year, offering students and educators the change to showcase their patriotism, creativity, and commitment to education. With thousands of dollars in scholarships and awards available, these programs encourage young people to reflect on what it means to be an American while honoring teachers who inspire them.
Voice of Democracy
The VFW’s premier scholarship competition, the Voice of Democracy program, invites high school students in grades 9-12 to submit a 3-5 minute recorded essay on this year’s theme: “How Are You Showing Patriotism and Support for Our Country?” Students begin competing at the local VFW Post level, with opportunities to advance to district, state and national contests. More than $2.3 million in scholarships are awarded annually, with the top national prize set at $35,000.

Smart/Maher VFW National Citizenship Education Teacher Award
The Smart/Maher Teacher of the Year award honors educators at the elementary, middle, and high school levels who go above and beyond in promoting citizenship, civic responsibility, and America’s history. Teachers nominated by their peers, students, community members or themselves are eligible for recognition at the local, state, and national levels.
Young American Creative Patriotic Art Contest
The Creative Patriotic Art Scholarship Program gives high school students (grades 9-12) the chance to express their patriotism through works of art. Students may submit drawings, painting, or digital art reflecting their pride in America. Scholarships totaling more than $150,000 are awarded annually, with the top scholarship prize of $15,000.
All contests are sponsored locally by VFW Posts, with deadlines of October 31, 2025. The Patriotic Art contest deadline is March 31 2026. Winners advance through district and state competitions,
ultimately leading to national recognition. Rules, entry forms, and more details can be found at www.vfw.org.
The VFW invites all students, teachers, and community members to get involved. By participating, young people can strengthen their academic skills, earn scholarships, and reflect on the freedoms we
enjoy. Teachers can be recognized for their role in shaping the next generation of leaders.
