Salvation Army Hosts 6th Back-to-School Supply Drive

Donations prep local students for new academic year

The Salvation Army Plymouth Corps is hosting its 6th Back-2-School Blitz with opportunities for the community to both give and receive as students prepare for a new academic year.

Through Tuesday, Aug. 20, The Salvation Army Plymouth Corps is accepting requests from families in Plymouth, Canton, Belleville and Northville for each of their children in grades kindergarten through 12th to receive a school supply-filled backpack and $25 gift certificate to Payless Shoe Stores.

Families who are pre-screened through the Plymouth Corps will receive a voucher for the Back 2 School assistance. To register your family, call 734-453-5464. School supplies will be distributed to pre-registered families on Aug. 27 at the Plymouth Corps.

The Back-2-School Blitz offers two opportunities for individuals throughout the
community to donate new school supplies and new socks and undergarments, as
well as money to provide children with gift certificates to purchase shoes. Collection dates and times are as follows:

  • 1–6 p.m. Friday, Aug. 23 at The Salvation Army Plymouth Corps, 9451 S. Main St. in Plymouth
  • 11 a.m.–3 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 24 at Twisted Rooster, 9729 Belleville Rd. in Belleville
Volunteers will be on hand at both locations to collect backpacks; supply cases and bags; 1 inch binders and pocket folders; #2 and colored pencils; crayons; erasers; markers and highlighters; black, blue and red pens; wide ruled paper, one-subject notebooks and composition books; rounded-tip scissors; rulers; and glue sticks and bottles.

“We are seeing and hearing of clients returning to work, albeit at a much lower rate or at reduced hours,” said Laurie Aren, director of family and community ministries at The Salvation Army Plymouth Corps in a news release. “Army Plymouth Corps. “We also know that many continue to struggle as unemployment benefits run out or as folks accept pay cuts to maintain jobs. Preparing kids to go back to school can be very expensive so this is a practical way to support our families and students as they return to school. This is such a generous community.”

The Back 2 School Blitz is presented in partnership with the Plymouth-Canton and Van Buren School Districts and the Plymouth-Canton Community Schools Clothing Bank (which will distribute all donated socks and undergarments).

Other supporters include the Colonial Club of Plymouth Northville Club; Rotary Club of Plymouth A.M.; Plymouth Canton Civitan International and the Belleville, Canton, Plymouth and Northville Rotary Clubs. The service organizations, along with a number of local churches, are hosting internal collection drives to deliver their members’ donations to the Back-2-School Blitz.

Participating churches include: St. John Neumann, Trinity Episcopal Church, Church of the Nazarene, St. Anthony Parish, First United Methodist Church, Northville Civic Concern and Our Lady of Victory.
