Youth Orchestra Celebrates 10th Anniversary

The Michigan Philharmonic Youth Orchestra (MPYO) begins its fall season by celebrating its 10th anniversary.

The youth orchestra began in 2003 under the umbrella of the Michigan Philharmonic Orchestra. Started with only 10 string players, the orchestra has grown to more than 85 students in four different ensembles all under the direction of Michigan Phil Music Director and Conductor Nan Washburn.

The MPYO attracts students from age 8 – 18 from all over the metro-area. For younger string players there are two different levels of string ensembles and for late middle and high school players the full Youth Symphony which includes strings, winds, brass and percussion. In addition, flute players have the opportunity to be part of the MPYO Flute Choir under the direction of Maestro Washburn, who was a former professional flutist.

The Michigan Philharmonic Youth Orchestra performs two major concerts during the season on the stage at the Village Theater in Canton and an outdoor concert in Kellogg Park in June.

In addition, to studying under an award winning conductor, the two upper ensembles also have the opportunity to perform side-by-side with the Michigan Philharmonic on two concerts each season. There is also an MPYO String Fellowship given each year which affords the winner a place in the orchestra on the opening Michigan Philharmonic concert of the season.
