ROYAL OAK, MI — The free pedicabs rides may be in Royal Oak to stay, at least during the summer.

Thanks to the success of the new parking structures, the Royal Oak Downtown Development Authority (DDA) is continuing to fund the private pedicab service, SKOOP, to provide free rides to the public in downtown Royal Oak during the month of August. The two are also in discussion to bring SKOOP back in 2020.

“The goal of bringing in SKOOP is being reached in that it is helping people realize our new parking structures were strategically placed to be just a quick walk from wherever they are going - the SKOOP rides show them how short their walk would be,” said Gary Baglio, owner of Five 15.

The electric bike taxis will continue to be available to the public on Thursdays from 5-11 p.m.; Fridays from 6 p.m. to midnight; Saturday from 6 p.m. to midnight in August.

"We’re excited to continue SKOOP services in Royal Oak and for the possible return next year!” said Josh Cooper, Skoop founder and CEO. “Supporting economic growth in cities such as Royal Oak, by driving traffic to local businesses in a fun way, is the heart of our company."

The rides are available to take pedestrians to and from downtown Royal Oak parking garages to destinations in downtown Royal Oak.

“SKOOP, which operates a fleet of electric bike taxis, has been providing the rides for the past two months in a promotional effort by the DDA to help the public get acclimated to our new parking structures – so everyone can see how readily available and convenient parking is in downtown Royal Oak,” said DDA Manager Sean Kammer. “With our new parking structures, it is more convenient than ever to get around and enjoy all the offerings of downtown Royal Oak.”

Whether it’s to and from the venues participating in the Live Music Thursdays, the Thursday Royal Oak Commission for the Arts Summer Concert Series, or to any restaurant, shop or entertainment venue, SKOOP rides will serve a specific route to downtown’s key areas.

“It’s been fun seeing creatives and tech pros who work in the city pull up to the restaurant in SKOOP taxis for after work cocktails,” said Chef John Prepolec, owner of Mr. B’s. “It’s very been positive for businesses.”
