Have Your Say on Saying the Pledge

We asked readers on Twitter and Facebook to tell us what they thought of the proposal to have all students say the Pledge of Allegiance.

At Tuesday's meeting, the Board of Education to have each school day begin with the Pledge of Allegiance.

We asked readers on Facebook and Twitter what they thought of the idea. Here is what they said.

Kim Johnson Kaster: I feel our country pride has been slipping. I feel one of the reasons is because we no longer say the pledge of allegiance in our classrooms. I remember doing it everyday and feeling pride about being an American. However, I feel we should say the original pledge.

Kelly Driscoll Saiyacork: I had no idea they didn't. Free speech should be those that don't want to participate can stand silent. As long as that is allowed, than I think it is a wonderful parts of civics.

D.j. Clarke-Medved: Absolutely!!! We said the Pledge everyday. Those who disagree can leave!!!

Cheryl Sanders Girvan: I didn't realize it wasn't being said in Saline schools. I think it is an important for children to not only learn to recite the pledge, but to also understand why the pledge is said. There are so many opportunities for teachers at all levels to teach the Saline student body with regard to this pledge. By dissecting the pledge, we more fully understand and appreciate what our forefathers wanted for the United States and its citizens. I hope the pledge does become a daily activity for the Saline School System.

Jacquelyn Blackmon Lindimore: Needs to happen daily!!

Michelle Franklin Engelhardt: I think it should be done everyday in each grade K-12.

Amy Harwell Sankaran: I think it is not something the school board should be worrying about. I think they should worry about funding, class sizes, teacher quality, etc. if I thought reciting something actually led to patriotism, then that would be one thing. But recitation almost certainly doesn't while history and civics lessons with actual learning will.

Neeko Robison: Why do we need to be forced to recite the pledge of allegiance? What will it do for us, as high school students? Patriotism is a great thing to have, but at the same time forcing us to recite something which refers to God takes away our freedom of religion, and that's definitely not what the United States stands for.

Patti Tanner: K-5 already do it, just about MS/HS right? Waste of time. Will the PoA police be watching & issue demerits? #micromanaging

Corey Lord: Only if they go back to the pre-1950's #pledge!
