Hornets Pin Pioneers, Railsplitters in SEC Quad

Saline had no trouble with their SEC rivals at Pioneer.

The Hornets varsity wrestling team improved to 14-2 by sweeping both meets in a quad at Ann Arbor Pioneer Wednesday.
Saline pinned Pioneer 40-16 and took down Lincoln, 63-15.

Double winners included Taylor Ticknor, Ryan Boxeth, Adam Bruley, Dustin Funk, Alex Cornelius, Brandon Helle, and Ryan Nagy.

Against Pioneer, Boxeth (124), the Saline’s only season, started things off with a pin of his opponent at 5:22. Bruley (130) gave Saline a 10-0 edge with a 12-3 win over Luke Tobin. Dustin Funk came from behind and won an 11-10 decision over Quandre Thomas. Saline added to its lead with an 11-2 decision victory by Cornelius over Robert Pieter.

Ryan Wellings (152) won by pin at 4:19. Nagy (171) earned three points with a 7-2 decision victory. Helle (189) won by pin over opponent Michael Waldon.

At 103, Kevin Fuller won a 9-7 decision over Billy Cobb-Giulley.

Ticknor closed out the victory with a 16-1 victory over Will Murphy.

Against the Railsplitters, Bruley, a state qualifier last year, overcame a sore knee and pinned his opponent at 1:47 to open the meet. Funk followed with a pin at 3:30. Saline led 18-0 after Cornelius pinned his opponent at 1:55.

Chris Slattery (160) won by pin in 1:46.

Nagy and Helle won by void.

Saline’s heavyweights picked up victories. At 215, Jason Anthony won by pin at 1:47. Austin Sullivan at 285 with a pin at 5:11.

“We had a couple guys out today and we weren’t at our best, but I thought we did pretty well,” said Scott Powers. “The thing I like about this team is that they listen and they work hard.

The Hornets return to action Saturday at the L’Anse Cruese Invite.
