Saline Laps Tecumseh in the Pool

After a tough morning practice, the Hornets still had enough in the tank to win.

On many nights this season, the results of the evening meet will be secondary to what takes place in the morning. At Thursday morning’s practice, the Hornets swam 7,000-yard set.

When you practice that hard in the morning and senior captain James Fisher goes out and swims a state cut time (4:56.37) in the 500-yard freestyle, you know things are looking good for your team.

The Hornets dominated the leader board, winning every individual event and every relay. Saline went 1-2 in five of the nine individual events and two of the three relays.

Josh Ehrman, Simon Rucinski, James Fisher and Will McCullough took the 200-yard medley relay in 1:46;12 to open the evening. Michael Bundas, Matt Stevens, Stefan Koberl and Matt Sieffert were second in 1:46.96.

David Boland captured the 200-yard freestyle event, winning in 1:44.71, more than four seconds faster than the D1 cut. Lucas Allen was second in 1:54.79.

Adam Whitener won the 200-yard individual medley in 1:57.89, beating the state cut by almost six seconds. Tom Walls was second in 2:08.37 and Geoffery Duong was third in 2:15.37.

Austin Deal was first in the 50-yard freestyle (24.02). Ben Pummell was third in 25.30.

Sam Blair won the diving event, scoring a 245.95. Ethan Johnson was second at 228.30. Dustin Wall was fourth with 206.10.

Ehrman won the 100 fly in 52.51 to beat the D1 cut by almost three seconds. Michael Bundas also made the D1 cut, finishing second in 54.76. Austin Deal was third in 1:01.58.

“That’s pretty impressive for Michael because the fly isn’t even his event,” said Brunty.

Pummell won the 100-yard free style, finishing in 54.85. Rucinski was third in 57.70.

The team of Walls, Allen, Boland and Bundas took the 200-yard freestyle relay in 1:31.28 to best the state cut. Matt Lund, Dyong, Deal and Pummell were third in 1:36.64, .11 seconds behind Tecumseh.

Saline went 1-2-3 in the 100-yard backstroke. Stevens won it in 59.22. Sieffert (59.38) and Stefan Koberl (59.47) were right behind him.

In the night’s 11th event, Whitener won his second event of the meet, swimming the 100-yard breaststroke in 1:02.24.

The Hornets finished the night by taking the top two spots in the 400-yard freestyle relay.

Ehrman, Fisher, Walls and Lund took first, finishing in 3:24.75. Boland, Stevens, Koberl and Duong finished in 3:32.25.

“We know our top guys are going to do well. We’re working on developing the next level that we’re going to need as we move forward. They’re coming along,” Brunty said.
