Saline Man Accused of Assaulting Officers During Arrest

John Craigmile is charged with assault with a dangerous weapon and assaulting and resisting a police officer.

A 24-year-old Saline man faces two charges after a scuffle with early Christmas morning.

John Gustav Craigmile, charged with assault with a dangerous weapon and assaulting, resisting and obstructing a police officer, was scheduled to have his preliminary exam in front of Washtenaw 14A District Judge Donald Shelton Tuesday morning. The hearing was delayed.

According to the police report, Craigmile was driving on westbound Henry Street when a Saline Police cruiser pulled behind him.  The police cruiser turned on to Ann Arbor Street and noticed Craigmile speed up, according to the report. The officer caught up to Craigmile and enacted a traffic stop for speeding, according to the report.

According to the report, Craigmile stopped his vehicle in front of 218 McKay Street, riding up the curb and blocking a driveway. Craigmile then put the car in reverse, forcing the officer to reverse the police cruiser to avoid being hit, according to the report. Craigmile ignored orders to remain the vehicle, according to the report. The officer began interviewing Craigmile, who the officer suspected had been drinking, according to the report. When a second officer arrived, Craigmile began walking toward his residence. When the first officer grabbed his arms in an attempt to put him back in the vehicle, Craigmile resided and became aggressive, according to the report. Police took him to the ground and during the struggle. Craigmile punched both officers in the head and body and also used a police flashlight to strike the officers, according to the report.

The scuffle came to an end when his father came out to the scene and helped calm him down, according to the report.

Under arrest, Craigmile refused a Breathalyzer test. After a warrant was obtained, blood was drawn at St. Joseph’s Mercy Hospital.

Police say a bag of what they suspect is marijuana fell out of Craigmile’s pockets during the incident.
