Big Boy's Closing Stirs Memories

Shelby-Utica Patch editor remembers restaurant as a place for family bonding.

For me, Shelby-Utica Patch editor, Marina Cracchiolo, the restaurant on 21 Mile Road and Van Dyke has been a bonding place for my father and his children and, now, grandchildren.

But now the Big Boy in Shelby Township has closed, leaving only memories.

Since I was a kid, my immigrant Italian father’s favorite place to take us when mom was out of town or taking a night off of cooking was that Big Boy location.

He couldn’t pronounce the name well, so we knew when we were going to “Biggy Boy” we were in for a treat.

Just recently, as I was driving past the restaurant, I heard my 2-year-old niece say from the back seat, in the exact accent my father would have said, “Look Biggy Boy.”
