Political Signs Crop Up In Every Corner of Township

With the August 7 primary election in Shelby Township just a little over a month away, the candidates for several spots - including supervisor, trustee, clerk, and others - have placed political signs all over the township. 

These colorful advertisements, featuring the candidate’s name and usually a little basic info, are near roadways, on front laws, and many other spots throughout the area. It’s hard to drive just one block or go for a walk without seeing one or more of these signs. 

There are rules governing the placement of political signs and the zoning ordinance for political and other types of signs. A copy is available through the township’s Code of Ordinances. Read on for a summary of what is and what’s not allowed: 

• Political signs shall not encroach into any road right-of-way nor shall they be attached to any utility poles or trees. 
• Approval of the property owner shall be required prior to the placement of a political sign on any site. 
• Political signs must be removed three days after the election. 
• No political signs shall be erected more than 45 days prior to an election. 
• All signs shall be located outside of a 25-foot clear vision triangle measured along any abutting road right-of-way and/or driveways to the site. 
• Temporary signs may encroach into front yard setbacks, provided that they observe a 25-foot clear vision triangle and do not encroach into any existing road right-of-way.
