Utica Artist's Work to be Displayed in New St. Joseph Mercy Oakland South Tower

The new St. Joseph Mercy Oakland South Patient Tower will display the works of 84 Michigan artists.

Utica resident Suzanne M. Johnson was one of 84 artists selected to provide artwork for the new St. Joseph Mercy Oakland (SJMO) South Patient Tower.

The new eight-story tower will have 208 technologically enhanced, private patient rooms. It's scheduled to open in 2014.

A callout in this spring by SJMO asked artists to submit artwork that represents peace and healing through nature or water and landscapes. The SJMO arts program is aimed at creating an experience that heals bodies, nurtures souls and comforts hearts, according to SJMO.

More than 225 artists from throughout Michigan applied to have their artwork considered.  However, only 85 artists were selected. A total of nearly 850 pieces of artwork were selected, including 47 major commissions.  Funding for the artwork is being provided by private donors.

Submissions represented a variety of media, including sculpture; two-dimensional and three-dimensional artwork; original art; oil, watercolor and acrylic paintings; limited edition prints, giclee prints, mixed-media art, glass, mosaics, wall sculpture, fabric art, collages and photography.
