VIDEO: Ever Wondered What It's Like Taking the Bus through Shelby, Utica?
Watch Patch's video blog as Editor Marina Cracchiolo takes the SMART Bus to work.
As I embarked on my SMART Bus journey through Shelby and Utica, the day my mom gave me the Dr. Suess' Oh, the Places You'll Go! poem came to mind.
"Waiting for a train to go or a bus to come, or a plane to go or the mail to come, or the rain to go or the phone to ring, or the snow to snow or waiting around for a Yes or a No or waiting for their hair to grow. Everyone is just waiting."
That line kept flashing before my eyes as I waited for the 510 Van Dyke bus to pick me up in front of the on 23 Mile Road in Shelby Township.

Taking the bus in the suburbs can sometimes be just like the poem.
It can take you to more than 6,000 bus stops in Wayne, Oakland and Macomb, and you can meet some interesting people along the way.Â

But the real reason I embarked on my journey was to find out how easy or hard it is to get around Shelby and Utica with the bus. And what I found was it's a lot easier if you do your homework ahead of time by researching your route on www.Smartbus.org.
There are several ways to use the SMART Bus system. Travelers can chose between fixed-routes or SMART connectors, which provide curb-to-curb services to places in the area such as Lakeside Mall, St. Joseph's Hospital, Macomb Community College and , to name a few.
However, reservations are required ahead of time for the connectors. For more information, call 866-962-5515.
All buses are wheelchair accessible and offer a bike rack.
