Athens-Avondale Gymnastics Coach Earns Hall of Fame Honor at Western

Sue Mussat will be inducted into the Western Michigan University Athletic Hall of Fame in October.

Sue (McCarthy) Mussat of Troy will be inducted into the Western Michigan University Athletic Hall of Fame on Oct. 26 at the Radisson Plaza Hotel in Kalamazoo. She will also be honored at halftime at the Broncos' football game against Northern Illinois on Oct. 27.

Mussat, formerly of Grand Ledge, received a full athletic scholarship to WMU, where she competed for the Broncos from 1988-1991. She did her prep training under the current USA Olympic Team head coach John Geddert.

Mussat was the 1989 MAC All-Around Champion, Balance Beam Champion, and Floor exercise Runner-Up. She is only one of only three athletes in WMU history to win the all-around title.

While at WMU, Mussat was a member of the All-MAC team, MVP, broke seven WMU records, and was a member of the Academic All-MAC team. She earned a post graduate scholarship and was named Presidential Scholar (the highest academic honored bestowed by WMU).

Mussat has been involved in prep gymnastics since her graduation from Western. She was head coach of Rochester Adams gymnastics from 1994-2007. While at Adams, Mussat won two MHSAA State Team Titles in 2002 and 2003. Her teams also finished Runner-Up in 1997, 2001 and 2004.

Mussat was chosen Michigan High School Gymnastics coach of the year in 2001 and 2002. She has coached 19 athletes to individual state titles.

Mussat resides in Troy with her husband, Chris, and her two sons. Alex, 15, is a sophomore at , and Braden, 10, is a fifth grader at . She currently coaches the Athens/Avondale Varsity Gymnastics Team.
