City Delays Decision On Marijuana Facilities

Independent Caregivers Continue To Grow In Troy

During Monday’s work session, Troy City Council discussed the city’s policy on allowing medical marijuana businesses, including dispensaries, to operate within city limits. The audience of 30 or so residents heard from experts and officials about the possibility of allowing commercial marijuana businesses in Troy. While there are already 70 licensed caregivers in the city already, each allowed to grow for specific patients, the new categories of business permitted under the law include growers, manufacturers, testing operations and distribution, including transport and dispensaries.

While the mayor and some council members oppose marijuana in Troy, others told the Oakland County Times they favor some marijuana facilities from a business standpoint. “Warehouses that were empty, now they’re being used for medical marijuana,” Councilman Ed Pennington told the Times. “If we opt in for grow facilities only, you’re going to limit the number of growers… If we don’t opt in, there will be vacant buildings and we’ll lose that opportunity.”

While the mayor considers marijuana a “gateway drug,” and other council members worry about Troy’s “brand,” no decisions were made Monday, nor were any votes taken. Read full coverage of this story in the Oakland County Times.
