Patrick Mikes' Son Sentenced for Murder of Father

The former University of Notre Dame student who pleaded guilty but mentally ill to second-degree murder offered an apology to his family and the community.

Patrick Mikes, 21, was sentenced to 12 to 20 years in the Michigan Department of Corrections on Sept. 10.

Mikes, a former University of Notre Dame student and honor student at University of Detroit Jesuit High School, was charged with second-degree murder in the baseball bat beating of his father, Patrick Mikes Sr., 55.

Mikes had disappeared in July 2012 and his son initially told police his father had gone on a bike ride and hadn't returned to his Troy home. Investigators discovered blood in the basement and located the father's body on Aug. 10 in a cornfield in Genesee County. Police said there had been no history of violence between the two men previously.

The Troy Times reports that Mikes was apologetic in the courtroom, offering thanks to his family and the community who had come to Oakland County Circuit Court in his support.
