Recall Supporter Creates Cartoon; Troy Mayor Supporters Mail 'Lions Den' Flyer

With time quickly running out, those who support the recall of Troy Mayor Janice Daniels and those who support her are clashing, campaigning and raising funds in an effort to sway Troy voters before the Nov. 6 election.

Last week, No Troy Recall – the political action committee supporting the mayor – mailed a four-page flyer to Troy residents (attached) comparing Daniels to the biblical story of Daniel in the Lion's Den and calling Recall Janice Daniels members "extremists."

"From the day she was elected the extreme political idealogues in the city have been angry because they lost the election one year ago to a conservative women," reads the first page of the flyer. Daniels beat councilwoman-at-the-time Robin Beltramini, a fellow Republican, in the November 2011 election.

Last month, No Troy Recall also clashed with Recall Janice Daniels when they began distributing yard signs that bear a striking resemblance to the logo that has been used by Recall Janice Daniels since March.

This week, recall supporter Nancy Gross, a 33-year Troy resident and an instructor at Macomb Community College, revealed a cartoon she created recently with a former student of hers. The cartoon, which is illustrated by MCC Fine Arts major Joe Culver, depicts Troy voters being poured liquid from a bottle of "Janice Daniels" into shot glasses labeled "Irresponsibility," "Misinformation" and "Intolerance."

"It is the result of a dream that I had, and a former student, who happens to be an amazing artist, helped put it on paper," Gross said. "I think it is pretty self-explanatory."

Meanwhile, both groups are continuing to raise money for their respective causes.

Last week, Recall Janice Daniels, with help from former Ferndale mayor and Oakland County Commissioner Craig Covey, hosted a fundraiser in Ferndale. This Tuesday, No Troy Recall will host a fundraiser at at the American Polish Cultural Center.

Daniels took office in November of 2011 and first came under fire in December for her anti-gay Facebook comment. She has remained the center of controversy after voting against the Troy Transit Center (a scaled-down version was later approved), telling the Troy High School Gay-Straight Alliance she would bring in an expert to tell them  comparing the dangers of homosexuality to the dangers of smoking cigarettes on a radio show, and writing a lengthy position paper some viewed as personally attacking city employees and council members.
