Troy City Clerk: 'Kind of a Light Turnout' for Michigan Primary

A slow but steady stream of voters trickled into the – the polling location for Precincts 26, 27 and 30 – late Tuesday afternoon to cast their ballots in the Michigan primary election.

"This year's kind of a light turnout," Troy City Clerk Aileen Bittner said Tuesday afternoon. "We figured it would be about 25 percent."

Bittner said this year's voter turnout is comparable to the 2008 August primary election in Michigan, which also drew out about 25 percent of Troy's registered voters, as well as the presidential primary election in February, which .

More voters chose to vote by absentee ballot in Tuesday's election than in the February primary with 5,900 ballots returned to the City Clerk's office, compared to about 5,000 in February. More than 6,600 absentee ballots were issued.

Though voter turnout may be low this month, Bittner predicts 80 percent or more of registered Troy voters will vote in November's election, especially with a recall issue on the ballot.
