Troy Residents Taken In By Rental Scam

House Not Really For Rent, Money Wired To Nigeria.

Troy Police reported that an area resident was taken in by a rental scam Dec. 28 after finding a house for rent on Craigslist. The victim found an ad, and then agreed to rent the property sight unseen. The home in question is located in the 6000 block of Livernois.

After placing $10000 in an account at Bank of America, according to the landlord’s instructions, the victim visited the rental house and the home’s actual owner, who lives onsite, told him that four other people had been taken in by the same phony landlord.

According to Troy Police, “The homeowner had placed his home up for rent on Zillow and believes this is how the suspect gained information regarding it. The victim went back to the bank to discover the $1,000 deposit had been wired to Nigeria.”
