Lost Yorkie Finds Loving Home With Young Family and More News Near You

Patch's 30 sites throughout Southeastern Michigan reported on a ton of big news this week. Here's a look at some of the headlines outside of the Greater West Bloomfield area.

1. More than two weeks later and dozens of attempts to try and reconnect a lost Yorkie with his owner, a young couple living in Shelby Township have decided to adopt the adorable pooch.

"We call him Georgie after Curious George because he got lost," said Nina Castellana, who found the lost dog on Sept. 10 outside her home on 25 and Dequindre while walking her own Yorkie Poo.

The 21-year-old and her boyfriend, Sam Marino, have posted fliers in Shelby Township and Rochester, because the dog was found on the border of the two towns. They've also reached out to Patch in hopes that the dog's owner is a viewer, and posted lost dog ads on Craigslist. 

Since then, the couple has been bombarded with calls. Some from offers to adopt the dog, and some claiming they are the rightful owner of the purebred Yorkie, which is retailed at anywhere between $500 and $2,000.

Castellana said her goal has always been to help connect the dog to its rightful owner, but at this point, they have decided to treat him as their own.

2. Northville Patch reported on Wednesday that a redistricting proposal could be put before the Northville Public Schools Board of Education for approval as early as March or April, according to Superintendent Mary Kay Gallagher. The new districts would be implemented in the 2013-14 school year.

The process will include opportunities for community input, with community forums planned for February. The findings of a district demographics study will be presented by the consulting group Plante Moran on Oct. 2.

3. Farmington Patch reported on on Thursday the local history of Japanese balloon bombs used during World War II. Claudia and Peter Anton, who have lived on Fendt Street, just off of Gill Road for nearly 40 years, said that in March 1945, their backyard was the landing site for one of more than 9,300 balloon bombs that were launched by the Japanese.

While many landed on the west coast and Alaska, there was only one other reported Japanese balloon bomb found in Michigan, in Grand Rapids.

4. Canton Township Police arrested a woman on robbery charges Sept. 16 after police say she attempted to steal several items from an area Walmart store and then lost her shirt in a scuffle with store security, reported Plymouth-Canton Patch.

Police parked just outside the store reportedly said they noticed a female who was topless running from the store doors. She stopped after the responding officer activated his vehicle siren.

5. Andover High School officials confirmed the Barons boys varsity soccer team will host a special homecoming game against Royal Oak on Oct. 12 in lieu of the school's varsity football team folding earlier this school year, reported Bloomfield Patch.

It's the first time soccer will be featured at homecoming in school history. And it also restores much of the homecoming experience one final time due to the pending merger with Lahser to Bloomfield Hills High School in 2013.
