Smucker's Recalls Natural Chunky Peanut Butter in Michigan

The Ohio-based J.M. Smucker Co. is recalling 16-ounce jars of Smucker’s Natural Peanut Butter Chunky distributed in many states, including Michigan, due to possible salmonella contamination, according to a report in Fox News.

The recalled jars have a "best if used by" date of Aug. 3, 2012 and Aug. 4, 2012, plus the production codes 1307004 and 1308004, according to the article.

Locally, grocery store managers at , , and all said that either the brand was not carried or was not on shelves.

Most persons infected with salmonella bacteria develop diarrhea, fever and abdominal cramps 12 to 72 hours after infection, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Most people recover within a week, but some may require hospitalization; in rare cases, the infection can be fatal.

Smucker says no illnesses have been reported, according to Fox News.

The product was distributed in: Arkansas, Colorado, Delaware, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Maine, Maryland, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, New Jersey, New York, North Dakota, Ohio, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, South Dakota, Texas, Virginia, Wisconsin and the District of Columbia.
