Biggest Solar Flare Of The Year Could Bring Northern Lights To Minnesota Twice

NOAA and AccuWeather say a rare severe solar storm could make the aurora visible across Minnesota twice this week.

MINNEAPOLIS, MN — A severe solar storm could bring a dazzling display of northern lights to Minnesota and much of the United States this week.

Forecasters with the NOAA Space Weather Prediction Center issued a Severe (G4) Geomagnetic Storm Watch through Wednesday following an X5.1-class solar flare from the sun on Tuesday.

According to AccuWeather, it’s the largest flare of 2025 so far and one of the 40 strongest recorded in the modern space age.

The local forecast supports that possibility, with skies over the Twin Cities remaining mostly clear tonight and Wednesday, according to the National Weather Service.
