MINNEAPOLIS, MN — The Twin Cities is bracing for a dangerous weather combo Wednesday as extreme heat and strong thunderstorms move through the region.

A Heat Advisory is in effect from noon to 8 p.m., with heat index values expected to reach up to 101 degrees, according to the National Weather Service.

But it’s not just the heat. The atmosphere is unstable, and thunderstorms are expected to develop this afternoon and evening, some of which could become strong or severe.

The storms are most likely after 5 p.m., with additional storms continuing overnight.

Storm hazards may include:

  • Damaging winds
  • Large hail
  • Heavy rain
  • Frequent lightning

The threat prompted the NWS to include the metro in its Hazardous Weather Outlook, warning that conditions could warrant SKYWARN spotter activation later in the day.

High temperatures will approach 89 degrees Wednesday, with the heat index making it feel several degrees warmer. Overnight lows will only fall to the low 70s, offering little relief from the heat.

Conditions should calm down Thursday and Friday before storm chances return again over the weekend and into early next week.
