Over 17k Speeding Citations In July: Here's How Many In Woodbury

WOODBURY, MN — In July 2021, officers, deputies and troopers from 294 agencies across Minnesota reported 17,205 speeding citations, according to a news release from The Minnesota Department of Public SafetyOffice of Traffic Safety.

Woodbury Police Department reported 33 speeding citations in the month of July, officials said. The Washington County Sheriff's Department reported 162 total speeding citations in July, with the highest speed coming in at 103 mph, according to the news release.

In July throughout the state, 94 speed-related deaths and 250 speed-related serious injuries were reported-numbers higher than those in previous years, according to officials.

• In 2020, 66 speed-related deaths and 219 speed-related serious injuries were reported
• In 2019, 39 speed-related deaths and 214 speed-related serious injuries were reported
• In 2018, 61 speed-related deaths and 202 speed-related serious injuries were reported
• In 2017, 50 speed-related deaths and 225 speed-related serious injuries were reported

July is part of the campaign, "Help Slow Down Behaviors Endangering Minnesotans," the office said. Here are the number of citations in July statewide in previous years:

• 2020: 323 agencies reported 16,122 speed citations.
• 2019: 322 agencies reported 21,439 speed citations
• 2018: 317 agencies reported 14,661 speed citations
• 2017: 319 agencies reported 16,580 speed citations
• 2016: 316 agencies reported 13,214 speed citations

The Office of Traffic Safety urges drivers to slow down, saying "speeding excuses won't save you in a crash."
