The Masons were invited by the hospital's top-ranked Shriners officials, the clinic said. All Shriners are Masons, the clinic said.

"It is an important and sacred ceremony for all Masons and Shriners, in this case in particular, because this building is to be used for their philanthropy – Shriners Children’s," the clinic said in a news release.

During the ceremony, the stone will be checked using ancient tools to ensure it is straight and level, the clinic said. The stone will then be consecrated with corn, wine and oil, which are all symbols of prosperity, health and peace, the clinic said.

The Freemasons have historically performed this ceremony of laying cornerstones for new buildings due to their heritage as builders, the clinic said.
