LAS VEGAS, NV — Former Nevada Attorney General Adam Laxalt and Clark County Sheriff Joe Lombardo emerged as the winners in Tuesday's Nevada primary election for U.S. Senate and governor.

In the U.S. Senate race, eight Republican candidates ran Tuesday, hoping they'd get the opportunity to unseat first-term Democrat Catherine Cortez Masto in the November general election. That included front-runners Laxalt and William "Bill" Hockstedler, a health care executive and Air Force veteran.

Republicans targeted the Nevada Senate race as among their top targets as the GOP seeks to take back control over the chamber in the 2022 midterm elections. The GOP establishment, including Florida Sen. Rick Scott, the chair of the National Republican Senate Committee, and Arkansas Sen. Tom Cotton have supported Laxalt’s candidacy. He's also gained support from former President Donald Trump and Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell.

“President Trump is the most popular Republican official in America by a long shot,” Corry Bliss, a Republican strategist who works on campaigns around the U.S., told The Associated Press. “If you have his endorsement and you have resources to advertise that, you should win.”

In the final weeks before the primary, Laxalt faced a surprisingly spirited challenge from retired Army captain and Purple Heart recipient Sam Brown, who garnered large crowds and bolstered his campaign with strong fundraising numbers, particularly among small donors.

In the gubernatorial election, a whopping 15 Republican candidates ran to get the chance to unseat incumbent Democratic Gov. Steve Sisolak. The field included several candidates who believe and peddled the baseless theory that Trump was the rightful winner in the 2020 presidential election.

The governor race featured front-runner Lombardo, a Trump-endorsed candidate who gained national headlines after the mass shooting at an outdoor concert in Las Vegas in 2017. It also included former U.S. Sen. Dean Heller, biotech entrepreneur Guy Nohra and lawyer and former boxer Joey Gilbert.
