Sleepy Senior's Stove Signals Smoke Alarm In Las Vegas

Las Vegas Fire & Rescue responded to two mid day calls yesterday.

LAS VEGAS, NV - Las Vegas Fire & Rescue say an elderly man may have fallen asleep while cooking on Sunday, leading to firefighters responding to the man's apartment where they extinguished the smoldering food and transported the man to University Medical Center to be treated for minor smoke inhalation.

Firefighters responded to the calls at 3"56 p.m. on Sunday and found the man inside with smoke in the apartment alone. A press release said there was "heavy smoke" coming from the stove, but no damage was reported to the apartment on Cedar Ave.

In another call, firefighters responded to a fire on Hillcrest Ave. where at vacant home was on fire. At 2:56 p.m. on Sunday, "heavy flames and smoke" was visible from the home, which is currently vacant due to code violations, neighbors told firefighters. Firefighters believe people may have been squatting in the home. The fire was out within ten minutes and the damage was estimated at $25,000.
