Here are the top stories in Bedford today:
- Remember to license your dog in Bedford by April 30! You can also enter your dog to be Bedford's TOP DOG. The winning dog will receive a free license for the year and will enjoy having his or her photo on all dog licensing materials for that year. The TOP DOG winner will be introduced to the Bedford Town Council during one of their meetings. The deadline to email a photo of your dog is the last day of the year, and the winner is announced in mid January. Email the town clerk your submission before Dec. 31. The fee to register your dog for the required town license ranges from $2 to $10. Every owner or keeper of a dog 4 months or older has to register their dog with the Town of Bedford, or face penalties. (Town of Bedford)
- The state Senate rejected an impassioned plea by Merrimack lawmakers to pass a bill requiring the Saint-Gobain plastics plant, and not the town, to pay for PFAS removal from contaminated water and soil. The Town had reached an earlier agreement with Saint-Gobain in 2016 where the plant agreed to water filtration upgrades. The bill would have required Saint-Gobain Performance Plastics to pay for the removal of PFAS forever chemicals that contaminated local water supplies and soil. PFAS from the plant permanently contaminated ground water in towns near the plant, including Bedford. The Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee sent the House-passed bill (HB 478) to interim study, a "polite way" of dispensing with the legislation.
