Here are the top stories today in Bedford:

  1. The Saint-Gobain plastics plant in Merrimack has agreed to permanently provide clean drinking water to five towns impacted by contamination with PFAS "forever" chemicals from the plant. The communities include Merrimack, where the plastics plant is located, as well as Bedford, Litchfield, Londonderry, and Hudson. Approximately 1,000 properties will get access to clean water. Saint-Gobain has been under fire since PFAS chemicals were discovered in 2016, after years of contamination. (WMUR Manchester)
  2. If you fish in New Hampshire, $55 million in federal grants will be used to overhaul the fish hatchery system used to stock New Hampshire lakes and ponds. Fish and Game officials plan to upgrade its aging network of properties in response to a federal environmental lawsuit and new federal anti-pollution standards. The issue is the level of pollution coming from the state’s largest hatchery, the Powder Mill in New Durham, which eventually feeds into Lake Winnipesaukee’s Alton Bay. American Rescue Plan Act dollars will be used to begin the hatchery overhaul. (With subscription/The Union Leader)
  3. Bedford Firefighters arrived at a fire at an apartment complex on Iron Horse Drive Sunday where a crowd of residents had gathered in the parking lot. Smoke could be seen pouring from the building when firefighters arrived. Firefighters from Merrimack were also asked to help fight the blaze. Firefighters went door-to-door through smoke-filled hallways to make sure that all residents had evacuated the building. No injuries were reported, but many residents were not able to return to their apartments due to heavy water damage from the sprinkler system. Bedford firefighters said a couch in a second-floor apartment was on fire. The cause of the blaze is still under investigation. (Bedford Patch)
