Here are the top stories today in Bedford:

  1. A shout out to Friendly Pets of Bedford! Friendly Pets is not only friendly, they reached out to the Animal Rescue League of New Hampshire to hire shelter dog Nobles in their "Hire a Pet" program. Nobles is their "newest employee!" Friendly Pets, a pet store right here in Bedford @friendlypetsnh, hired Nobles as a Taste Tester, "which he very qualified to do." Friendly Pets has won the Best Pet Supply Store in NH five years in a row. The ARLNH said that Nobles is a very hard worker. Family-owned Naticook Veterinary Hospital in Merrimack also hired Nobles as "Head Dogtor." Another notable dog named Maggie nailed her interview and was hired by The Inside Scoop in Bedford. The ARLNH said "hiring" a shelter pet means you will display a plaque of your chosen shelter pet, and announce they were hired. Additional social media promotion "is hugely appreciated, but not necessary!" Find out more here: (Facebook)
  2. Here's a clean drinking water update for Bedford: The New Hampshire Department of Environmental Services and Saint-Gobain Performance Plastics reached an agreement to permanently provide safe drinking water to approximately 1,000 families and businesses in Bedford, Hudson, Litchfield, Londonderry and Merrimack. Drinking wells were closed in 2016 when unsafe levels of PFOA chemicals from the Plant's air emissions contaminated drinking wells, NHDES said in the April 18 online release. The maximum level of allowed PFOAs was lowered in September of 2019, and they found that approximately 1,000 properties tested above the new safe levels. The agreement includes 353 properties in Bedford south of County Road and east of Liberty Hill Road. You can read the full story here: (NHDES)
  3. May is a busy month at The Bedford Public Library. The first Junior Librarians Information Session for 5th-8th graders and their caregivers to learn more about the program and answer questions will be on May 11 at the Library. Two information sessions by Zoom will be offered later in the month. The Bedford Library Foundation is excited to have mountaineer, author and Antarctic guide Ed Webster tell the story of Sir Ernest Shackleton's famous Endurance Expedition 1914-1917 on May 12. From my notebook:

  • Girl Scouts of the Green and White Mountains: "Reason #13 to love Girl Scouts. Commitment to Community Service. Troop 10705 painted a map of North America on the playground at their elementary school when they were in 3rd grade." (Facebook)
