Here are the top stories today in Bedford:
- A shout out to White Willow Salon & Day Spa in Bedford! The River Road spa made the top 10 list of The Best Spas in New Hampshire in the WMUR Viewer's Choice 2022. White Willow Salon & Day Spa was a fan favorite and was the only spa in Bedford to make the list. Other top mentions went to Bella Village in Windham, Natural Glow Day Spa in Newbury, and The Spa at the Omni Mount Washington in Bretton Woods — just to name a few. You will find the full list here: (WMUR)
- A new hotel for business travelers is coming to Bedford. After a three-year pandemic delay, construction is ready to begin on a new Home 2 Suites by Hilton at 270 S. River Road. The hotel project had been approved by the Bedford Planning Board in April 2019, but the approvals had lapsed, so the Planning Board approved the project again on April 18. Kevin Jacobs, Hilton Worldwide CFO, told Yahoo Finance that he thinks that corporate travel will "return to near pre-pandemic levels" by the end of the year. And it looks like many of those travelers will be heading to Bedford. (subscription/The Union Leader)
- You may admire the rush of water crashing over dams in the Granite State, including Bedford, but did you know that most of the dams in New Hampshire were built decades or centuries ago? A new Associated Press analysis found that a growing number of dams pose a safety risk. Hundreds of dams around the state are in "poor" or "unsatisfactory" condition, and more than 50 dams have failed in New Hampshire over the past 100 years. Steve Doyon, the state’s chief dam safety engineer, explained that most dams are state owned. U.S. Rep. Annie Kuster of New Hampshire introduced a bill of nearly $26 billion to make dams safe, increase power generation, and remove dams that have "outlived their usefulness."
