Here are the top stories in Bedford today:

  1. "One person CAN make a difference when it comes to recycling!" said the Northeast Resource Recovery Association in a recent Bedford Public Library post. Recycling just one can save enough energy to run a computer for 3 hours, or a TV for 2 hours, they said. And if you recycle a 6-pack you can save enough energy to run a computer for more than a day. The Northeast Resource Recovery Association is busting common recycling myths and misinformation that can make recycling more difficult. You can find out more here: (Facebook)
  2. Find out about the town of Bedford's agreement with the Saint-Gobain plastics plant in Merrimack to provide clean alternate drinking water for residents of Bedford impacted by PFAS contamination on Wednesday, May 4, at 6:30 p.m. The NHDES said in a press release that the online informational meeting will be to "discuss the specifics of the agreement, the steps that will follow, and to answer questions." You must register to attend the meeting. Find out more here: (Bedford Patch)
  3. A bill to legalize adult marijuana use in New Hampshire went up in smoke. The Senate committee voted against a cannabis bill that would run on the New Hampshire state liquor store model. The adult-use marijuana bill, by Rep. Daryl Abbas, R-Salem, proposed a state-run liquor store model for cannabis. Abbas said the bill he introduced would work to mitigate social impacts, adding that the field sobriety test is a problem that needs to be fixed. Those against the bill included Chief John Bryfonski, Chief of Police in Bedford. You can read the full story here: (Nashua Telegraph)

From my notebook:

  • Boston Marathon: A shout out to Bedford runner Kayla Coffey, who recently moved to Bedford. Her finish time at the Boston marathon was 3:23:43. Congratulations Kayla! We are proud of the runners who took part in the 26.2-mile Boston Marathon. Kayla joined 25,000 other athletes in Boston on Monday, April 18. (Boston Marathon)
  • Animal Rescue League of NH: "A big thank you and shout out to Maddy who visited the shelter yesterday to deliver a huge cart full of donations of pet food and toys she collected for her birthday. Our animals thank you, Maddy!" (Facebook)
  • Boy Scouts: Kick off 7-week Hike-a-Thon. (Turn to 10)
  • Bedford NH Police Department: "We will be participating in the DEA National Prescription Drug Takeback Day as a collection site Saturday on April 30 from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. You can get rid of your unwanted/unused vape pen/e-cigarette devices too." (Facebook)
