Here are the top 3 stories today in Bedford:

  1. A New Hampshire woman was scammed out of $8,400 through a popular money transfer app, police said. Katelyn DuLong, a 26-year-old microbiologist from Manchester, paid money to a person she believed was a Bank of America employee inquiring about "a potential unauthorized transfer" from her bank account. She was caught in a sophisticated scam involving the money transfer app Zelle, text messages, and calls from a spoofed telephone number. Police said they have received at least four complaints about Zelle-related scams in June. (Subscription/The Union Leader)
  2. $100 million is now available in state funding to create new housing in New Hampshire to address the housing shortage. Officials said that the housing shortage in New Hampshire is "so drastic that it's now directly impacting the economy." Businesses are saying they can't attract new workers because they can't find affordable places to live. Elissa Margolin of Housing Action New Hampshire said, “If it’s difficult for a new medical resident to accept his residency at an area hospital because they can’t find housing they can afford — you can imagine what it's like for a single parent with a couple of kids. Applications for the available funding will be available on Monday, officials said. (WMUR)
  3. About $13.3 million of grant money is available to make New Hampshire schools safer. The new grant program is for "public and nonpublic schools." Public schools can apply before July 22 for the first round of grants totaling about $3.3 million. Then, another $10 million in grants will be available for schools not accepted in the first round, as well as nonpublic schools with a deadline of Aug. 26. The funds are for schools to improve surveillance and control access to school buildings and improve emergency alert systems. You can find out more here: (Patch)
