Thousands Without Power In NH; Roads Slippery: Storm Update

Storm delivers about 2 inches of snow per hour in New Hampshire; up to 10 inches expected; gusts as high as 65 mph; 9,000 without power.

GRAY, ME — Thousands of Granite Staters lost power on Monday after a snowstorm delivered at least half a foot of snow in some parts of the state with more snow expected.

Around 10 a.m., forecasters from the National Weather Service said more heavy snow was expected with total accumulations between 5 and 10 inches.

“A transition to rain is expected as precipitation ends,” the alert said.

Heavy snowfall rates, between 1 and 3 inches, were expected. In Concord, about 6 inches of snow had fallen in a matter of hours before changing to freezing rain. Roads are slippery around the state.

Around 8:30 a.m. on Monday, the NWS presented a map showing the rain-snow battle — with onshore winds pushing the freezing rain inland.

“Very dangerous travel conditions through the morning, don't travel if you don't have to,” forecasters stated on Twitter.

Forecasters said, later Monday, the weather will shift a bit.

“A return to cold and windy conditions is expected tonight and Tuesday with low wind chill values developing,” the alert stated. “Winds may gust as high as 45 mph.”

On the Seacoast, wind gusts are expected to be as high as 65 mph.

“Damaging winds will blow down trees and power lines,” the alert stated. “Widespread power outages are expected. Travel will be difficult, especially for high profile vehicles.”

At around 10:30 a.m., about 8,000 electric customers were without power in the state.

Nearly 3,000 Unitil customers were without power including around 2,400 customers out in Hampton. Smaller outages were reported in Seabrook, Stratham, Exeter, Kensington, and East Kingston. In Chichester, about 20 people are without power.

Eversource reported more than 2,000 customers out including major outages in Nashua, Greenland, Epping, Hudson, and Hampstead. Smaller outages were reported in Amherst, Londonderry, Portsmouth, and Newmarket.

The New Hampshire Electric Coop reported around 4,000 customers without power including around 1,500 in Waterville Valley and more than 1,400 in Thornton and smaller outages in the Upper Valley and Lakes Region.
