Barnegat Adjusts Trash Rules Amid Windy Weather

Barnegat officials discussed modifying an ordinance Tuesday to give residents the option to put trash out in black bags at the curb.

BARNEGAT, NJ — If strong winds have whipped your garbage cans into the street, you now have a new alternative for trash pick-up in Barnegat.

The township committee discussed modifying an ordinance Tuesday to give residents the option to put trash out in black bags at the curb for pick-up.

The current guidelines require trash to be contained in 32-gallon cans. Mayor Al Bille said the committee has received multiple complaints about trash cans and garbage blowing around in the wind.

“This is truly a windy town. We all know that,” Bille said. “We had phone calls Friday—garbage was everywhere.”

The modified ordinance, which becomes effective immediately, does not prohibit the continued use of trash cans.

Trash placed at the curb must be sealed tightly in black bags as animals can easily tear into white bags, according to Bille. Recyclables must continue to be placed in containers at this time.

Bille advised residents who live in Barnegat’s 55+ communities to check the trash guidelines of their homeowner’s associations.
