Elderly Male Dies On Barnegat Bay Beach, Police Say

Man found floating in the water on Saturday.

An elderly Waretown man who went for a swim on the Barnegat Bay Bathing Beach was found floating face down in the water and no longer moving on July 8, according to the department's Facebook page.

Barnegat police were called to the beach at 11:15 a.m. on Saturday, July 8 on a report of a CPR in progress.

"Upon arrival, officers observed bystanders performing CPR on the 74-year-old male victim. Barnegat officers took over CPR until the victim was transported to Southern Ocean Medical Center where he was pronounced dead," according to the post.

The victim was identified as Anastasio Papavasiliou, 74, of Waretown.

Officers were told that the victim had been observed entering the water and swimming for a period of time before he was observed to be face down and no longer moving. A lifeguard was assisted by bystanders in removing the victim from the water, according to the post.

Recreation Director Jeanne Broadbent said she could not comment on the matter. Township Administrator Martin Lisella said the only information he had was posted on Patch. Mayor Albert Bille was out of state over the weekend and said he could not comment.
