BARNEGAT, NJ — Staff from the Barnegat Township School District (BTSD) are getting ready to face off in a basketball game against the Harlem Wizards on Oct. 16, where all proceeds will benefit the Barnegat Elementary PTA (BEPTA).

Staff and members of the board of education will compete against the Harlem Wizards, similar to the Harlem Globetrotters, in the game at 6:30 p.m. at Barnegat High School. In the game, the audience doesn't simply watch - they become active participants.

The Barnegat community is welcome to attend the game, which will feature a surprise halftime show, souvenirs, and concessions. Students who purchase a “Wiz Kids” jersey prior to or at the event can complete warm up exercises with the Harlem Wizards before the game begins.

Twenty-three BTSD representatives, including teachers, nurses, counselors, paraprofessionals, principals, and a board of education member, will then take the court as a team and challenge the Harlem Wizards to a basketball game. The night will conclude with a dance party for all in attendance and the opportunity to score a Wizard’s autograph.

“We like to have events that involve the entire community,” said Colleen Angus, vice president of the BEPTA. “It is a wonderful way to develop connections, and the kids are so excited to bring their parents, siblings, aunts, grandparents, other family members and friends to the event.”

Last year, all 725 seats at the high school were sold for the Harlem Wizards game and more than $10,000 was raised for the BEPTA. Angus is hoping for comparable results this year. The BEPTA will use the funds to provide students with school assemblies, events such as field day and the sixth-grade class trip, scholarships and much more.

“Events like this remind us that school spirit extends far beyond the classroom,” said BTSD superintendent Brian Latwis. “It’s about creating memories and new bonds between staff and students. It’s also a great way to support our PTA just as they always support our school community. I’m excited to see our BTSD staff show off their basketball skills.”

Tickets can be purchased for $20 in advance; $25 at the door. There also are reserved area seatings for $30 and $50. To buy a ticket, visit https://harlemwizards.com/schedule-tickets.
