The Friends of Southern Ocean County Animal Shelter shared some tips on how to keep dogs safe with the fireworks on the Fourth of July.

MANAHAWKIN, NJ — While many people love fireworks, plenty of dogs do not. The Friends of Southern Ocean County Animal Shelter, based in Manahawkin, have shared some tips on keeping Fido safe ahead of the Fourth of July weekend.

To keep your dog safe, keep them home during fireworks. Keep them inside or on a leash at all times, even if you have a fenced in yard.

Some dogs might get scared and try to run, so keep a collar on with ID tags and make sure your microchip information is up to date.

Have a current photo of your dog ready in case he does run away.

Try distracting your dog. Keep pets busy with Kongs or other toys, and play music or turn on the TV to mask the sound.
