MANAHAWKIN, NJ — The Southern Ocean County Animal Facility in Manahawkin will soon be undergoing a temporary closure for repairs and renovations, Stafford Township officials said.

The shelter will close Feb. 22 and anticipates reopening around April 10 after work is complete, officials said.

During this time, Stafford's animal control will be using the Northern Animal Control Facility located at 615 Freemont Ave in Jackson. Stray pets picked up by animal control will be impounded there and owners will be required to reclaim them there as well.

"As always owners should be proactive in ensuring their pets do not escape or run at large," officials said. "Checking fencing and gates around your property prior to letting your pet outside and monitoring your pet when they are in the yard are two ways to ensure your pet doesn't escape."

Officials also emphasized the importance of licensing pets and having them wear their licensing tag at all times. This allows animal control officers to contact owners and reunite them with their pets.
