Route 72 Is One Of The Most Feared Roads In The U.S., Survey Says
A survey of 3,000 roadtrippers determined that Route 72 is one of the top 50 scariest routes in the country.

BARNEGAT, NJ — Stretching from Burlington County all the way to Long Beach Island, Route 72 is a necessity for those hoping for a summer day on the island - but a particularly congested necessity.
And most of the route is located in the remote Pine Barrens. This is likely why a survey of 3,000 roadtrippers named Route 72 as one of the most feared routes in the country.
The survey, commissioned by Gunther Mitsubishi (a Florida Mitsubishi dealer) and carried out by QuestionPro ranked the top 50 riskiest routes in the U.S. and coming in at number 21 is New Jersey's own Route 72. It's the only Jersey road to make the list (though you surely can think of more that may fit the bill).

Respondents were asked what routes they most feared breaking down on.
The aforementioned remote nature of Route 72 and lack of service in areas means that you could be waiting for a while to get assistance.

Plus, the Jersey Devil might get you.
The survey doesn't even mention the traffic you get into as you get closer to the island, or the seemingly never-ending road work.
What's the number one most feared route in the U.S.? That would be Route 285 in New Mexico, according to the survey. This desolate stretch of road has limited access to service, and the arid desert location brings extreme temperatures for both people and their vehicles.
