Mosque Proposal's First Hearing, National Night Out This Week

Tuesday is going to be a busy night in this area.

National Night Out, a nationwide initiative that on a local level mixes local police with their community members, The also will be on hand to offer activities, information and other services.

Update: A movie initially planned for after the event has been canceled.

The food, information and entertainment at the Bernards event is free, as is Bernardsville's version of National Night Out.

The Bernardsville event starts at 6 p.m. at the Bernardsville Pool off Seney Drive. Residents are invited to enjoy a family night out, and meet local police, and also view a featured movie, "Tangled.

Meanwhile, a proposal that has generated local interest, the is due to be held at the Planning Board meeting scheduled for 7:30 p.m. next Tuesday, said Ali Chaudry, president of the Islamic Society of Basking Ridge. The society for now is meeting at the Community Center in Basking Ridge.

Chaudry said he would wait until the Aug. 7 meeting to discuss the details, and any changes or updates, made for plans for a newly constructed mosque to be located not far from the intersection with Somerville Road.

Chaudry, also a former township mayor, in January appeared in before neighbors and the to informally present plans to convert a four-bedroom home at 124 Church St. in Liberty Corner into an Islamic center to serve the nearby Muslim community.

Since then, representatives for the Islamic Society returned before the Planning Board in May calling for a new mosque building at the location along the main street in the Liberty Corner section of the township. The society already owns the property. Chaudry said the new building would be a Colonial style, with a design sensitive to the community's character.

Monday, Aug. 6, is the final day for donations of hardcover and paperback books, CDs and DVDs will be accepted at the Bernardsville Middle School, 141 Seney Drive in Bernardsville. Donations also will be accepted from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., said Bonnie Gould of Basking Ridge, who again is chairwoman of the sale.

The sale itself is scheduled for Thursday and Friday, Aug. 9 and 10, from noon to 8 p.m. and Saturday, Aug. 11, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

The Bernards Township Recreation, Parks and Pathways Advisory Committee meets at 7 p.m. Monday at the municipal building at 1 Collyer Lane.

The Bernards Board of Adjustment regular meeting is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. on Thursday at the municipal building.
