11-Foot White Shark Spotted Off New Jersey Coast

The white shark named Dold was tracked off the Jersey Shore coast last week, according to researchers.

JERSEY SHORE — An 11-foot white shark was tracked off the Jersey Shore coast last week, according to researchers.

The 761-pound male shark Dold "pinged" multiple times off the New Jersey coast on June 19 and 20, before continuing to swim north, according to data from OCEARCH, a non-profit organization that focuses on shark conservation.

OCEARCH tags sharks and releases them in order to track where they travel, seeking to learn their habits. When a shark like Dold "pings," it means its fins have broken the water of the surface, allowing researchers to track its location.

Dold, named in honor of SeaWorld's Dr. Christopher Dold, was initially tagged by the organization on Feb. 28, 2025. He is about 24 or 25-years-old, OCEARCH said in a YouTube video - putting him on the brink of adulthood.

"Tagged 45 miles offshore near the FL/GA line, Dold will provide critical data on the movements and behaviors of this essential apex predator," OCEARCH said.

The organization's research has shown that white sharks spend their winters in warm waters off the U.S. southeast coast and head north in the summer to coastal waters off New England and Canada.

You can track Dold and other sharks via OCEARCH's shark tracker.
